Dr Mia Zhang is a specialist ophthalmologist with expertise in cataract and glaucoma surgery. She has subspecialty training in glaucoma management and delivers high-quality care in both English and Mandarin.
Dr Zhang completed her ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital, where she served as Senior Registrar at Royal Prince Alfred and Bankstown Hospitals. She then undertook further subspecialty fellowship training in glaucoma and anterior segment surgery at New Zealand’s largest tertiary eye hospital. During this time, she gained extensive experience in the full spectrum of glaucoma care, including trabeculectomy, tube shunts (Paul and Baerveldt), PreserFlo MicroShunt, iStent, Kahook Dual Blade, and other minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS). She is also highly skilled in laser procedures including Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), micropulse, and cyclodiode.
In addition to glaucoma care, Dr Zhang offers advanced cataract and anterior segment surgery, including refractive cataract procedures using premium intraocular lenses tailored to the patient’s visual and lifestyle needs. She is experienced in managing complex anterior segment cases, as well as combined cataract and glaucoma surgery.

Dr Zhang is passionate about clinical research and surgical education. She was awarded the Vision Research Foundation Scholarship at the Australian and New Zealand Glaucoma Society (ANZGS) Conference. She also received the Australasian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (AUSCRS) Advanced Trainee Scholarship to attend the AUSCRS in Darwin where she presented on cataract outcomes involving over 700 patients along with artificial intelligence usage in surgical education.
Dr Mia Zhang has presented at leading national and international conferences including RANZCO, ANZGS, APAO, AUSCRS, ARVO, and the World Glaucoma Congress. Her work is published in respected journals such as Survey of Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.
Dr Zhang has a strong interest in professional leadership and wellbeing. She previously served as Co-Chair of the RANZCO Health and Wellbeing Committee and currently chairs the RANZCO Eye2Eye Editorial Board.
Dr Zhang has been a passionate volunteer with Vision of Islands since 2016, an Australian charity providing specialist ophthalmic services to Pacific Island nations such as Tuvalu and Tonga. The team delivers holistic clinical and surgical care, as well as training of local staff—a reflection of her commitment to sustainable, sight-preserving care.
She has been a Clinical Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney, Faculty of Medicine and Health since 2018. During her fellowship in New Zealand, she was actively involved in the University of Auckland’s teaching programs for ophthalmology trainees, medical students and optometry students.
She is also part of the faculty for the 2025 Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) course, run by the Sight for Life Foundation and the Sydney Eye Hospital Glaucoma Unit, educating trainees and fellows in advanced minimally invasive glaucoma surgery techniques.
